The Haleland Park sign, located at the corner of Nutmeg Crescent and the Saddle Road, was originally constructed and designed by Harold J. Stauble in 1996. Since then, however, the sign has fallen into disrepair. We were approached by a member of the Haleland Park residents committee to landscape and makeover the sign in an attempt to match their new vision for the neighbourhood.

Designs were tossed back and forth until we all agreed upon a look. Through the use of imaging software, Foliage Design is able to visualize the end product to the customer without even beginning landscape work. This technique cuts costs by allowing the client and us to make changes to the design early in the process. Although the design changed somewhat due to budget constraints and time, the end product represents Haleland Park's new vision to be one of Trinidad's finest neighbourhoods.

Designing and planting a garden on a hillside is challenging. Not only because of the work environment but plants always seem to grow better on even surfaces. Here at Foliage Design, nothing drives us more than a challenge. Therefore, once the design was approved, we began work on the client's dream garden.

A Hillside Waterfall

Areas of the garden were somewhat flattened to provide a serpentine pathway down the face of the hillside. Along the path, we placed benches so the client and her visitors could relax and admire the garden. At the point where the pathway meets the waterfall, we constructed a decorative bridge to cross the river. The waterfall extends the length of the hill and is bordered by decorative orchids, crinium lilies and an assortment of other foliage.

Garden Lighting

Appropriate garden lights were chosen to highlight beds along the waterfall. At night the hillside glows with various colours and textures and the movement of the water provides a calming and soothing atmoshpere.

What we learnt

Our client's garden was a challenging project and it was definitely one of the largest water features we have ever constructed. In the end, the client was elated with her new space and to us, that is worth all the effort and persevarence.

If serpentine paths and beds are one of the hallmarks of our design, then Debbie's garden can be considered a great show piece. Debbie needed a garden to provide sufficient privacy from the nearby golf course as well as highlight areas around her house such as the pool area for entertainment.

A Showpiece Front Garden

On entering the front garden a serpentine path leads you towards the main entrance of the house. The path is bordered with an assortment of Lantanas, Crotons, Rio and Red Tea providing an abundance of colour, while not obstructing the view of the front garden. A large urn on a pedestal bordered with larger foliage and a wall molding acts as a focal piece and gives character the garden.

Side Gardens and Privacy

To provide privacy, Heliconia and an assortment of Ficus trees were planted along the side of the fence. The heliconia not only provides sufficient privacy but it also blooms a brilliant red flower admired by visitors and the family alike. The privacy bed is bordered and highlighted with a mixture of Hemigraphis, Leriope and Mundo Grass. Small touches such as a bird bathe hidden among the foliage really stand testament to the love and care the owner has given to her garden.

Entertainment Area

The back garden not only provides a gorgeous hidden entrance to the golf course but also borders and accents the pool entertainment area. Variegated ginger, Acalypha and Ficus are all found in the back garden. A serpentine paver pathway leads from the house back entrance to the pool area. Pool chairs, a grill and a gazebo provide a perfect location for evening relaxing or nighttime entertainment. Bromeliad beds, a privacy hedge and a natural waterfall into the pool round out the back garden landscape.

What we learnt

Maintain, maintain and maintain. Not to take away anything from great forethought and garden design, but we can't say enough about garden maintenance. In the Caribbean, it can be difficult to maintain a beautiful looking garden especially with the extremes of the dry and rainy seasons. That's why Debbie calls Foliage Design in regularly to do maintenance of her garden. We can do the same for you and your garden. Contact us today to set up a site visit and consultation.

Building a Tropical Escape

This particular client had a tremendous love for gardens and gave us the freedom to really execute a unique design. Borrowing many design aspects found in nature, we constructed a free flowing garden with no recognizable patterns. Staying away from sharp edges and straight lines, really gave a sense of excitement to a visitor when walking through the garden – you never really know what’s around the corner.

Pool Area

Crossing over a small wooden bridge gains you entrance to the pool area, one the highlights of the garden. The tropical waterfall immediately draws your attention as the water cascades into the swimming pool. Almost hidden by water loving plants, water from a small pond overflows through rocks into the swimming pool below. The area surrounding the pool is lushly landscaped with tall foliage and trees giving the illusion that you are secluded in your own private rain forest. Continuing to the back of the house, one finds that it has been lovingly decorated with sculpture and personal touches such as plaques that read, “Welcome to our garden”.

Balcony Garden

Making your way around the house, more surprises await you. A wooden stairway leads to a balcony outfitted with a potted garden. Here is where the family can get together and talk about their day over a cup of coffee or tea. And after the family is gone and all is quiet, one can perhaps even enjoy a newspaper or a favorite book.

Final Thoughts

As a company, we are always learning. With this project, we learnt that given the resources, we can create not only an astounding garden but a beautiful living space. Every section, whether in the front garden, the pool area or the balcony, has its own unique feel but never feels unrelated. Together with the client, we have made a garden that will be cherished for years to come.

The Main Event: Water Features

IPSL is a leader in Plant Management services in Trinidad and Tobago. They contacted us with a pre-designed landscape plan, which included planting trees and hedges along the perimeter of the main car park and the design and installation of two water features.

Main Feature

The first water feature was position close to the entrance of the plant. Here, most employees would see it during their walk into and out of the plant in the mornings and afternoons. The water feature would feature two levels and a main pond area. As with all water features designed by Foliage Design, the water is filtered naturally through different layers of gravel and sand. Fish not only add to the appeal of the water feature, but provide another means of naturally cleaning the water. The look and feel of the feature is completed with water-based plants and colorful foliage surrounding the rock border. Indeed, the water feature has now become one of IPSL’s daily sights and sounds and perhaps even the culture. It’s not unusual for IPSL workers to toss a coin or two into the water feature while passing by. To us, this is reassuring. Our goal with every water feature is to strike a balance between being a focal point while still blending into the garden in a natural and unobtrusive manner. When the feature becomes part of a culture, we get excited: it’s an indicator to us that we’ve done or job right.

Secondary Feature

Shortly after completion of the main water feature, we were asked to design and install a focal point near the entrance of the plant. We decided to try something completely different. Our goals were to keep the costs low while providing a beautiful focal point for cars entering the parking area and pedestrians alike. After about a week of planning, we came up with our final design shown here. Elegant, yet simple; beautiful yet cost effective.

What we learned

Like any other design agency, Foliage Design works best when given design freedom and creative license. At times, this notion can be scary for clients, especially new ones. IPSL clearly understood this principle, even with the strict rules and regulations of a plant. Therefore, we were able to put our best foot forward and come up with some impressive designs. If you’re ever in the area, make sure to check out the new and improved IPSL garden areas.

Monstera deliciosa - The Philodendron is a climbing vine known by several common names. The Swiss cheese plant, Mexican breadfruit, and Split-leaf philodendron are the more typical names for this easy-to-care for houseplant. Native to the jungles of Central America, the Swiss cheese plant displays a magnificent presence as the leaves can grow up to two feet in length.

The unique leaves of this plant are what draw plant enthusiasts to the Monstera. As the plant matures, the leaves will become deeply notched from the edges towards the center. Older plants will have very deep notches and large-sized leaves. Immature plants display plain green leaves and resemble the heartleaf philodendron.

This indoor plant prefers full sun, so keep within 3 feet of a window which receives sunlight for at least 4 to 5 hours. Be sure to also keep the plant away from heat and cooling sources such as vents or doors so that it maintains a consistent temperature.

Variegation is the appearance of differently coloured zones in the leaves, and sometimes the stems, of plants. This may be due to a number of causes. Some variegation is attractive and ornamental, and gardeners tend to preserve these. The term is also som. The plant thrives in sun or light shade in subtropical areas, grows to about a foot tall, and is typically used as an ornamental in gardens and borders. The plant is also used as a ground cover or hanging plant.

Ficus Benjamina - The indoor use of Ficus benjamina is highly praised and has made this tree a staple today for the interior plant industry. This is mainly due to the rapid growth and ease of maintenance of Ficus benjamina as well as the aesthetic value the plant adds to an otherwise bland room. Once Ficus benjamina becomes acclimated to its final resting place very little effort is needed to maintain a good looking and healthy specimen. However, leaves can turn yellow at times, suggesting that it has been over watered or a disease is present. Early warning signs such as these, allow our team to treat the plant before the symptoms get worse.

Dieffenbachia seguina - Dieffenbachias are great indoor plants and outdoor plants in our tropical climate. When placed indoors, the plant needs light but filtered sunlight through a window is usually sufficient. The plant needs moderately moist soil. The soil should be fertilized with either regular liquid fertilizing or fertilizer pellets or spikes. Leaves will periodically roll up and fall off to make way for new leaves. Yellowing of the leaves is generally a sign of problematic conditions, such as a nutrient deficiency in the soil. Dieffenbachia responds well to hot temperatures and dry climates.

Before being used as a houseplant, the croton was popular for tropical gardening and was also used for decorating colorful arrangements. Its leaves were used to add color and decorate hotels' interiors.

The croton plant is basically a small shrub that can reach to a height of about 5-6 feet and the roots are the most sensitive part of the plant. There are about 750 species of the plant in the world and it is best suited to be grown in greenhouses or sun rooms. The leaves of this plant vary in their shape and size depending on the specific variety of the plant. Some leaves are wide, while some are narrower, and some bear leaves like oak leaves.
